NYBG Orchid Show

I love orchids!  Last Saturday, March 20th, it was beautiful day and the whole family went to see the New York Botanical Garden's Orchid Show: Cuba in Flower.  I have to say, we picked the perfect day to go because the weather was gorgeous!  The NYBG always does a great job of putting together these really magnificent shows for everyone to enjoy and just take in the beauty of nature.  We enjoyed every minute of it and with so many different varieties and colors of orchids I didn't want it to end.  I couldn't stop taking pictures, but I will refrain from posting every single one in this post.  (Sorry, for the picture heavy post!) I have picked my favorites for your viewing pleasure! Enjoy!

According to Wikipedia, orchids are the largest family of flowering plants and have over 22,000 species!  Can believe that?!  This is my favorite exhibit at the NY Botanical Garden and now you can probably see why that is.

Flag Show

Last night was the Flag Show!  Kyle did a great job putting together the show and we had a great turnout.  This show was in conjunction with our voter registration drive and the League of Women Voters also spoke to our students about their role in the polls this year.  This is an important year to vote since our economy is rocky at the moment and we need everyone to voice their opinion as to who would be best to lead our country in the next four years.

I was so happy that my mommy and Shaun came to see my photograph (above) which was on exhibit, but more importantly they met each other for the first time ever.  Later that evening when I got home, my mommy said that she thinks that Shaun is really nice, knows what having great manners means, and she loved that he unexpectedly brought her flowers.  What a relief, she likes him!  Shaun also brought me calla lilies, aren't they gorgeous?!  I love the blend of colors!

"Our Flag" show

Who would have thought that one of my photographs would be in an art show?!  This is a random photograph taken during the American Heart Association Wall Street walk in May.

The cocktail reception is Wednesday, October 15th from 5:30-7:00pm.  The exhibit will be up at Grace Institute from September 29th until November 7th, stop by to see all the great pieces of artwork featuring the American flag.

Obsession with silhouettes

What is it about silhouettes?

Wikipedia says:

A silhouette is a view of some object or scene consisting of the outline and a featureless interior, with the silhouette usually being black. The word is an eponym named after Etienne de Silhouette, a finance minister who in 1759 imposed such harsh economic demands upon the French people that his name became synonymous with anything done or made cheaply .

We see the Victorian style silhouettes and Chinese shape cutouts used everywhere.  There is something about silhouettes that really intrigues me.  Is it that you can only see the outline of the subject in front of an amazing background or maybe it is the background that we often disregard when there is a subject in front?  Photographs usually focus on the subject rather than the background.  I love these two photographs, they were both taken late in the day around sunset.
