Most of the time Shaun and I are adventurous and willing to explore new avenues of cuisine, but recently we returned to our tried and true favorites. So I decided we need to be adventurous again by trying Caracas Arepa Bar. We've never been to a place that mainly served arepas and our idea of an arepa before today was the one sold at street fairs and carnivals. Boy, were our mouths in for a sweet and savory surprise!
We started with Tostones Mochimeros (fried green plantains topped with mojito mayo, a squeeze of lemon and white cheese). This alone won us over; so simple and yet so delicious!
De Pabellon (shredded beef, black beans, white salty cheese and sweet plantains) was our favorite! The best part is that you can substitute baked tofu for any of the meats which is what we did. The balance of sweet, salty and the baked tofu was perfectly delicious!
La del Gato (guayanes cheese, fried sweet plantains an avocado slices).
La Mulata (grilled white cheese with jalapenos, sauteed red peppers, fried sweet plantains and black beans) kicked up the heat a notch but the combination of flavors will make you go back for a second bite.
La Surena (grilled chicken and chorizo, with avocado slices and the classic and always enigmatic spicy chimi-churri sauce) is a blast of flavors in your mouth and the chimi-churri sauce is what really brings this arepa together.
The service was great and our waitress made the best suggestions. Who knew you could have this variety of arepas? I think that we will be returning to try out the rest.
